da silva (room 4e5)

dasilva.jpg

da silva hates me.
he waits until my light goes out and then he starts moving around in his room.
and then he starts playing his weird experimental music, which sounds like a badly tuned radio put through a series of compressors.
and then he goes to the communal kitchen, which is on my right, and he cooks a six course meal and meticulously does the washing up, all the while scurrying back and forth to his room, which is on my left, as he ferries the pots and pans and kitchen implements which he needs to the kitchen and back. all night he cooks and eats and then washes up and plays his weird music.
and then. if he thinks i might like to have a nap in the afternoon to rest my weary jet-lagged body, he starts putting up shelves on the other side of the wall we share, and he drills and hammers until i give up and get up and go out.
i want to wake up in the city that never sleeps, but i wish i could go to sleep in it too.

i love amerika and amerika loves me

just lately i have been having doubts about doubt - one of the most crippling doubts is the one where i think of posting something here and then i think : but is it worthy? is it even about doubt? how is it connected with doubt - because this blog is on doubt2.org where several (count ‘em) bloggers blog diligently about their doubt and if they slack off, they get a firm but polite email from doubt2 org staff reminding them of their obligations…

but no more! those days are over … ok …? because everything is about doubt - especially my non-doubt, such as it is - so be ready because this is going to be like the ephemera of old : full of interesting and witty stuff - useful things too, and to top it all off : i will be posting from interesting foreign lands, where there are … people and … things - unlike wagga, where there are mostly only things, and people that think they are things, and that other people are things, put there for their entertainment and/or gratification … he he …

one day to pack my doubts … next stop sydney … then : new york city here i come … i was going to have myself wrapped in felt, but air tahiti refuse to reserve exit seats for passengers wrapped in felt - on the other hand some of the doubt was assuaged when i read on their website that The maintenance of Air Tahiti’s fleet is the domain of the technical division staff

phew - they may be small but they know their stuff…

six songs by Jennifer O’Connor

two songs from jennifer o’connor’s new album Over The Mountain, Across The Valley, and Back To The Stars : Exeter, Rhode Island and the sublime Today, and four songs recorded solo for daytrotter including the amazingly wonderful tonight we ride - my song of the year … goddammit!

hello i’m a reject

i decided that i should try and create the impression that i am a real writer, although i am actually a half-arsed dabbler which is much better since it stops me, and other people, taking my writing too seriously. but now that i am a mentor on a real writing project, and launching a collection of poetry and prose (at the wagga wagga library - this friday at 5.30 … come along !) i really should make more of an effort.

thus i thought i might as well begin by starting a rejection slips collection, so i submitted a half-arsed sentimental childhood memoir (the cuban crisis, which, ironically, was also rejected by fourw, the very publication i am launching {insert emoticon here} to three magazines (meanjin, southerly and heat), and an editor, robert drewe for consideration for best australian stories 2006 published by black ink - the latter was submitted a week late to make it more likely to be rejected …

bookmark this page for my reviews of the rejection slips i receive as i build my collection
